Sumo : Japan's National Sport

On the surface, sumo appears nothing short of peculiar: hefty men clad in oversized loincloths, engaged in shoving matches within a confined ring, where the pre-ceremony often surpasses the duration of the actual bout. However, upon closer inspection, one uncovers a distinctive and intricate sport with a storied history. Wrestlers, committed to rigorous training regimens, showcase an unwavering dedication that leaves a lasting impression.

The origins of sumo are traced back to a Shinto ritual dance, where formidable men showcased their strength before the kami (gods or spirits) as a gesture of respect and gratitude, aiming for a bountiful harvest. Over time, it evolved into a method of gauging strength and identifying those adept in hand-to-hand combat. It wasn't until the Edo period that professional sumo wrestlers emerged from the ranks of amateurs, marking the inception of regular competitions. The standout fighters gradually attained a celebrity-like status, propelling sumo into mass popularity—the genuine genesis of the sport as recognized today.
